The Magic Flute is an electronic musical instrument that enables people whose only reliable movement is the head and breath to play music. The flute is similar to a harmonica or slide whistle in that it requires no fingers to play and both note and expression can be controlled using the mouth.
The flute swivels on top of a camera mount and can be moved up or down using the mouth piece. An internal gyroscope detects the angular position and converts that into a note or pitch. The strength of the breath into the mouth piece controls the volume of the note.
The notes that are played can be recorded into the flute from a keyboard or chosen from a set of 20 default scales. The flute is simple and easy to use, for example, a simple 3 note pattern could be recorded into the flute so that up, level and down select the 3 different notes.
Clever use of inward breath allows the user to independently change scales and reset the angular position to a known starting point in the selected scale.
